How to Install WordPress on cPanel in 5 Minutes (2026 Guide)
If you have web hosting with cPanel, installing WordPress takes less than 5 minutes using Softaculous — no FTP, no manual database setup, no command line required. This guide walks you through every step from login to your first post.
What You Need Before Starting
- A web hosting plan with cPanel access (like our Azion Cloud web hosting)
- A domain name pointed to your hosting (A record set to your server's IP)
- A free SSL certificate activated for your domain
If you just signed up for hosting, wait 5–15 minutes for your domain's DNS to propagate before installing WordPress. Installing before DNS propagates can cause issues with the site URL configuration.
Step 1: Log In to cPanel
Access your cPanel at yourdomain.com/cpanel or via the link in your welcome email. Log in with the username and password provided when you signed up for hosting.
Once inside, you'll see the cPanel home dashboard with all available tools grouped by category. The interface may look overwhelming at first, but you only need a few tools for a standard WordPress installation.
Step 2: Activate Free SSL First
Before installing WordPress, activate your free Let's Encrypt SSL certificate. This ensures WordPress is configured for HTTPS from the start, avoiding the headache of migrating from HTTP to HTTPS later.
- In cPanel, go to Security → SSL/TLS Status
- Find your domain in the list
- Click Run AutoSSL or click the padlock icon next to your domain
- Wait 30–60 seconds for the certificate to be issued and installed
Once done, your domain will show a green padlock when accessed via HTTPS. If AutoSSL isn't available, look for Let's Encrypt SSL in the Security section.
Step 3: Install WordPress via Softaculous
Softaculous is the 1-click script installer built into cPanel. It handles the entire WordPress installation automatically — creates the database, configures wp-config.php, and installs WordPress core files.
- In cPanel, search for Softaculous Apps Installer or find it under the Software section
- Click on WordPress (the most popular option, shown prominently)
- Click the blue Install Now button
Softaculous Installation Settings
Fill in these settings on the installation form:
- Protocol: Select
https://(not http) since you've already activated SSL - Domain: Select your domain from the dropdown
- In Directory: Leave blank to install at the root (yourdomain.com). Only fill this if you want WordPress at a subdirectory like yourdomain.com/blog
- Site Name: Your website's name (you can change this later)
- Site Description: A short tagline (changeable later)
- Admin Username: DO NOT use "admin" — pick something unique for security
- Admin Password: Generate a strong password (16+ characters, mix of letters, numbers, symbols)
- Admin Email: Use your real email — WordPress sends important notifications here
- Language: English or your preferred language
Under Advanced Options, you can set the database name and table prefix. Leave these at defaults unless you have a specific reason to change them.
Once filled in, click Install. Softaculous takes 30–60 seconds to complete. You'll see a success screen with links to your new WordPress site and admin panel (yourdomain.com/wp-admin).
Step 4: Log In and Configure WordPress
Visit yourdomain.com/wp-admin and log in with the admin credentials you set in Step 3. You're now inside the WordPress dashboard.
A few settings to configure immediately:
- Settings → General: Confirm your Site URL and WordPress Address both use https://
- Settings → Permalinks: Change to "Post name" for cleaner, SEO-friendly URLs (/your-post-title instead of /?p=123)
- Settings → Reading: Configure whether your homepage shows latest posts or a static page
Step 5: Install LiteSpeed Cache Plugin (Critical)
If your hosting runs LiteSpeed web server (like Azion Cloud), the LiteSpeed Cache plugin is the single most important plugin you can install. It's free, made by LiteSpeed Technologies, and dramatically improves performance:
- In WordPress, go to Plugins → Add New Plugin
- Search for "LiteSpeed Cache"
- Click Install Now, then Activate
- A setup wizard will guide you through the initial configuration
After activation, go to LiteSpeed Cache → Page Optimization and enable CSS/JS minification and combination. Then go to LiteSpeed Cache → Image Optimization to enable WebP conversion for faster image loading.
Step 6: Install Essential Plugins
Beyond LiteSpeed Cache, these plugins are essential for most WordPress sites:
- Yoast SEO or Rank Math: For meta titles, descriptions, sitemaps, and on-page SEO
- Wordfence Security: Malware scanner and firewall for WordPress
- UpdraftPlus: Scheduled backups to Google Drive or Dropbox (in addition to your host's backups)
- WooCommerce: If you're building an online store
- Contact Form 7 or WPForms: For contact forms
Keep plugins to a minimum — every plugin adds overhead. Only install what you actually need.
Step 7: Choose and Install a Theme
Go to Appearance → Themes → Add New Theme to browse the WordPress theme repository. Popular lightweight themes for good Core Web Vitals scores include Astra, GeneratePress, and Kadence.
Avoid "premium themes" from random marketplaces that load dozens of scripts — they kill performance. A lightweight theme + well-configured LiteSpeed Cache will always outperform a bloated page builder theme.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
- "Error establishing database connection": The database credentials in wp-config.php are wrong. Re-run Softaculous installation or check your database credentials in cPanel's MySQL Databases section.
- Site shows "Not Secure" despite SSL installation: Mixed content — some resources are loading over HTTP. Install the Really Simple SSL plugin to force all content through HTTPS.
- WordPress admin is accessible but the frontend shows a blank page: Usually a PHP memory limit issue. Add
define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M');to your wp-config.php file. - Softaculous says domain not found: DNS hasn't propagated yet. Wait another 15–30 minutes and try again.
